Programs
The Office of Minority Affairs sponsors summer programs that are designed to stimulate and cultivate interests in the health professions. OMA, along with the Area Health Education Center (AHEC), co-sponsors the Health Care Summer Institute(HCSI) for high school students and the Summer Research Program(SRP) funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for undergraduate students. The most recently added program is the Degree Seekers program. Currently targeting underrepresented youth of Washington County, this program is an outreach program designed to increase the numbers of underrepresented middle and high school students entering undergraduate institutions and going on to pursue careers in the health professions. It provides students with workshops and experiences that will help prepare them for college.
It is hoped that these summer experiences will ignite a desire for participants to pursue health careers at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
